Not every bedroom gets an arched window, and twelve foot ceilings, but in this case these architectural features may have seemed to obliterate the reality of a temporary move-in. Upon the first design consultation, the client had two main requests from our studio. First, the client desired a Nordic aesthetic with furniture that would arrive on site in no more than ten days, which limited the pool of Nordic furniture vendors we could source from. Secondly, all wall surfaces needed to remain nail-free or rather, ‘virgin’. The project limitations didn’t stop us from moving forward, and they rather triggered our creative minds to think of feasible ways we could achieve a Nordic aesthetic in a Florida Mac-mansion home, and within a ten day timeline.
If you have to style your bedroom ASAP with similar challenges, don’t fret. To simplify your process, start by admiring your blank canvas flooded with daylight, and let it inspire what you’re about to create. We’re totally obsessed with these 5 styling ideas.
1. Lean statement pieces against the wall. Nail-free
Give your crisp walls a minimal touch with a Scandinavian inspired full-height mirror from Blu Dot, and a seductive photographic print from iCanva. Determining the height of your pieces is key to deciding whether they are proportionate to each other. Once you infuse one Scandinavian statement piece, other accessories can be complementary even if they are of different design styles.
2. Add multiple layers of texture
Determining the right balance of textural variation is one of our favorite design decisions, and let me tell you why. It can transform a space from ‘meh’ to ‘yes!’ First, layer a rug on hardwood surfaces. Second, style your throne like a pro! Make the bed with a white crisp comforter from Perigold. Ditch the pillow shams, and use 24” square pillows to add height. Select your pillow pairs in a variety of textures ranging from large basket weave to small tweed. Introduce a new texture, pattern, or color such as llama fur.
3. Add a statement light fixture
Ceiling fixtures are extremely versatile: you can mount or hang anything your heart desires without committing to a permanent installation. We mimicked the round mirror with a globe pendant from Restoration Hardware, perfect for non-directional lighting with a soft glow. It not only balances the high ceilings, but adds a romantic touch to the space.
4. Juxtapose different art styles
Don’t be afraid to mix and match art styles and mediums within the room. From photographic prints to paintings, this display looks intriguing, and makes your art have that ‘collected’ look. For instance, if you have a bold, black & white photographic print, soften it a bit with a romantic acrylic painting.
5. Enliven the space with grasses and greens
Blooms may require careful attention, but pampas grass and lush greens won’t require much care and still perk up your space! Be careful about using bright greenery, especially when the hue can distract from the Nordic aesthetic you have created. With pampas grass, you achieve a feathery and plush look that looks fresh and chic. Drop them in a tinted vase, and let them be ‘soothe’ you gracefully.
6. Sprinkle in tabletop sculptures
No matter natural or playful, a stylish sculpture never fails to make a simple room come to life. On the wishbone end table, an eye-catching Vitruvian mask ‘blows’ a kiss to a set of mini vases.
A carved piece of wood by Z Galerie sits on an industrial wardrobe with bold black piping. It’s the perfect juxtaposition against the heavy industrial hardware.
My best advice to rental dwellers is to get creative with accessories and statement pieces to make your temporary space feel like your very own Scandinavian retreat. Homes whether rented or not, should be as unique as their owners, and you’re the only one that can take action by seeking for a design professional that can make your vision come to life. Fill your room with statement pieces that can be easily transported on to your next dwelling. Enjoy the process!
